With Venkaiah Naidu elected as India's 13th vice-president, BJP holds country's top constitutional posts

Succeeding his predecessor Hamid Ansari, Former Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu, a BJP leader from Andhra Pradesh is sworn in as the 13th Vice President of India today. Venkaiah Naidu was elected after defeating the former Bengal Governor and Mahatma Gandhi's grandson Gopalkrishna Gandhi. The polls were held on 8th August and the election has seen a record number of votes polled this year. Venkaiah Naidu has succeeded to bag 67% of the total votes which led him to the victory.


On winning he made a statement that he is thankful to the Prime Minister and all the party members for the support and that he will seek to utilize the Vice Presidential institution to strengthen the hands of the President and uphold the dignity of the Upper house.

Mr. Naidu also challenged Hamid Ansari's comments over the unease that Muslim minorities are feeling over the past couple of years in his farewell speech. Venkaiah Naidu challenged these comments saying that compared to the entire world, Muslims are safer in India and that people are trying to use the minority issues for Political purposes.
