With Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy at the helm, the YSRCP believes that a range of welfare initiatives over the past five years will bring it back to power. During election rallies, the party sought votes in the name of development and welfare and relied heavily on its solid political standing. Meanwhile, the main opposition party, TDP, has allied with BJP and Janasena, leveraging Prime Minister Narendra Modi's popularity.
In the 2019 Andhra Pradesh assembly polls, Jagan Mohan Reddy, the current chief minister of Andhra Pradesh, emerged victorious as his party won 151 out of the total 175 seats. The BJP, which went alone, failed to win any seats. TDP in power faced the wrath for not clutching special status and building a capital city and managed only to secure 23 seats. The JanaSena Party, led by Tollywood actor Pawan Kalyan, won just one seat in the 2019 assembly polls. In this election, the YSR Congress Party placed substantial confidence in the welfare actions executed by its government in Andhra Pradesh. At the same time, the TDP-BJP-JanaSena alliance trusts in converging anti-establishment votes. Interestingly, the Congress party handed its election responsibilities to YS Sharmila, AP's PCC chief and YS Jagan's sister.
The political rivalry between the present Chief Minister, Jagan Mohan Reddy, and former CM Chandrababu Naidu is deeply rooted in decades of history.
