The Women’s IPL / Women’s T20 Challenge first began in 2018 in Mumbai with two teams IPL Supernovas and IPL Trailblazers. In 2019, a new team, IPL Velocity was introduced and the matches were played in a Roundrobin format instead of a one-off. The same three teams are contesting in the 2020 Jio Women’s T20 Challenge and will compete against each other in three matches and a final.
The three teams, namely IPL Supernovas, IPL Trailblazers, and IPL Velocity are being headed by Indian International Women Team Cricketers Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandhana, and Mithali Raj respectively. All the teams comprise of international women cricketers like Shakera Selman, Chamari Atapattu, Sophie Ecclestone, Salma Khatun, Shashikala Siriwardane, Danni Wyatt, Nattakkan Chantam, etc.,
Indian Women Cricketers like Jemimah Rodrigues, Ekta Bisht, Devika Vaidya, Jhulan Goswami, Anuja Patil, Arundhati Reddy, Poonam Yadav, Deepti Sharma, Veda Krishnamurthy, Shafali Verma, Harleen Deol, Shikha Pandey, and many more.
Indian Cricketer Mansi Joshi who was a player of the IPL Velocity squad tested positive for COVID-19 has been ruled out of the tournament and Meghna Singh brought in as her replacement. Overseas Players like Sophie Devine, Amelia Kerr, Hayley Matthews, Suzie Bates, etc., who were a part of the previous season of the tournament are currently unavailable due to the clash of fixtures between 2020-21 Women’s Big Bash League in Australia.
The tournament is taking place in the Sharjah Cricket Stadium, UAE with all the necessary safety protocols. All the team players and the staff have completed 9 days quarantine before reaching UAE and six days quarantine in UAE.
The first match of the tournament is scheduled on 4th November between IPL Supernovas and IPL Velocity at 7:30 PM IST. The second match is on 5th November between IPL Velocity and IPL Trailblazers at 3:30 PM IST and the third match is on 7th November between IPL Trailblazers and IPL Supernovas at 7:30 PM IST. The Final is scheduled on 9th November at 7:30 PM IST between the winning teams.
