Reboots and Remakes are taking Over the Movie World- Where is this leading us?

Have we really reached a Stagnation point in Movie-making or is it just some mediocre minded people trying to make safe bets? How is this harming the film industry and humanity in general?

https://www.yupptv.com/movies

2019 has been a year of remakes and reboots in Hollywood as well as Bollywood. Many films that have won critical acclaim in the past have been remade in the year and many more are announced to arrive in 2020. What is it that is driving these two industries that are considered to be the largest in the World opt for remakes instead of investing in Originality despite the surplus resources that they own? Before diving into the storm, let us look at the remakes and how they are working out first.

Hollywood had remade and announced a remake of more than 20 films in the past year. The number is considered nothing concerning the films that are made on an average per year. But if we look at the films that are remade one can’t help but notice the stink around it. Let us look at some of the remade and rebooted films in 2019-20. Charlie’s Angels, Grudge, The Addams Family, Men in Black, Aladdin, Pet Semetary, Hellboy, Dumbo, Shaft, The Lion King, Tomb Raider, Jumanji, etc.

The same goes for Bollywood that has released and planning to release a myriad of films in the next year. Bollywood is used to remaking Hollywood films since the beginning of time. Old Super Hit Films like Aitbaar (Dial M for Murder), Teen Chor (We’re No Angels), Jhuk Gaya Aasman (Here Comes Mr.Jordan), Baghban (Make way for Tomorrow), Baazigar (There’s Something About Mary) are all remakes of the mentioned Hollywood films.

Many recent films can be included in this list. Salman Khan and Govinda starrer Partner is the remake of Will Smith starrer Hitch. Akshay Kumar’s Hey Babyy is the remake of a film named Three Men and a Baby. Kaante is of Reservoir Dogs, God Tussi Great Ho is of Bruce Almighty, Players is of The Italian Job, and Bang Bang is of Knight and Day.

Walking the same path as Hollywood, Bollywood also remakes the Super Hit older Hindi films with new stars to grant a fresh perspective to the stories and the obvious reason- to make money out of it. Films like Don, Ittefaq (which itself is a remake of British Film Signpost to a Murder), Agneepath, Devdas, etc., are remakes of older Hindi films.

The notable point that one can observe is that all these films are spread over a few years. Now as we jump to 2019- 2020 where many remade films have been released or being planned to release. The Superhit Shahid Kapoor starrer Kabir Singh is the remake of South Indian Blockbuster Arjun Reddy. And then there is Sushant Singh Rajput’s Drive which is a remake of the Hollywood film of the same name starring Ryan Gosling and Kartik Aryan’s Pati Patni Aur Woh which is a remake of Sanjeev Kumar’s film of the same name.

Upcoming films like Love Aaj Kal, Coolie No.1, Tiger Shroff’s Rambo, Dil Bechara (The Fault in our Stars), Sanjay Dutt’s Prasthanam (Prasthanam), Parineeti Chopra’s The Girl on the Train, are all remakes of films from old hindi hits, Hollywood or the South. In addition to these films, plans have been made to remake Hollywood’s Begin Again, Red, Forrest Gump, The transporter, and The Intern.

It is a well-known fact that only successful films are remade. The films though do not come with a certainty of success, do carry a tag of an above-average success rate which is an aphrodisiac to the investors. While there can be many reasons behind this, one cannot ignore the business perspective that plays a key role in any industry be it industrial production or art.

But what is the reason for this sudden blast of remakes? Is the movie industry focused on just making money? While it is a well-known fact that Money Drives all the research and Art in the World, the fact that most money is being spent on recreating the old art tells us that people are investing more in safe bets than in experiments. This while sounds good for a guy who just wants to get a job, make a family, and wait for death, is not the right attitude for someone who is investing in creation.

The fact that this trend is being followed worldwide also infers that the movie industry is turning more into a money-making machine than an art industry. As investing in the movie business became easier, an increasing number of investors are trying to make more money faster and this, while pouring money into developing art is restricting filmmakers to making commercial films rather than films with better subjects and depth.

The notion that films are just for entertainment and for money-making also has increased recently and this thought is not just restricted to the investors. The number of common people who are thinking this way has increased drastically and is becoming the reason for the dilution of the idea that looks at films as Art. The ignorance among the masses cannot be ridden of so easily if the top tier is at the crux of it all.

Though many filmmakers are making films that raise people’s consciousness, dig deeper into human minds, explore subjects and talk about taboos, as the money flow to commercial films is increasing, this is forcing the younger individuals to turn their concentration towards no-brainer commercial films that are fixated on making money. With the lack of necessary motivation or the resources to create better art, humanity will be drowned in unnecessary, irrelevant information which is detrimental to our collective evolution.

If this continues, the majority of future films will be a bunch of crowd-pleasing, meaningless pieces that neither help humanity think nor lets them evolve. The declining success rate of movies must have been an evidence of this fact. But we are collectively choosing to ignore it due to the lack of larger perspective and due to our tendency to focus on immediate profits rather than the future.

The point that needs an emphasis here is that, “There is an immediate necessity for thoughtful investors just as much as there is a necessity for thoughtful filmmakers. Investors with innovation, creativity, and vision that can empower the human mind are just as important as the filmmakers that possess those qualities.

Films (Art) can either empower humanity or help speed up its collective decay.

https://www.yupptv.com/minitheatre/parmanu

The film starts off in 1995, an era in which the whole world unitedly opposed the creation of Nuclear Missiles and India has done only one. Neighboring Countries like China has done 43 tests and India is under pressure from China, Pakistan, and the Western Countries to establish its power and abort any trials at Nuclear Devices. The story moves forward to reveal how India created Nuclear Missiles and successfully conducted the trials without the knowledge of the world. The Political, Strategical, and Security challenges that were faced by the persons involved at the time make up for an edge of the seat drama along with providing knowledge of a great thing that has happened because of their bravery.

John Abraham one of the best actors in Bollywood has delivered the performance of his life in this film and so did Boman Irani, Diana Penty, and Anuja Sathe. The songs by Sachin-Jigar and Jeet Ganguli, and music composed by Sandeep Chowta added to the patriotic feel of the film.

Bollywood Biopics: Content-Driven or Business Driven?

Biographical films are films that portray the story of a historical person.Biographical films dramatize the life of a person and the scenes involve the real-life incidents from his/ her life. We have witnessed many Biopics of prominent historical figures like Bhagath Singh, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, Vallabhai Patel, Subash Chandra Bose, Dr. BR Ambedkar, over the time in Bollywood.

And then there are the biopics of personalities that are practically unknown to common people like Padman, Manjhi: The Mountain Man, Aligarh, Sarabjit, Shahid, Neerja, etc. The trend has taken a new turn and we have been seeing Biopics of prominent personalities in Sports, Crime World, Politicians who are familiar to the audience, but their story is unknown to the lot. Reputable among these are Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, MS Dhoni: An Untold Story, Mary Kom, Dangal, Azhar, etc. You can Watch some of these latest movies online to know more about the lives of these people.

Famous Directors in Bollywood have been really trying hard to get the stories right and present them as realistically as possible. There are some films among these, which, in an attempt to bring the audience to the theatre, overdramatize certain situations and add some scenes that are completely non-sensical with zero references to the person’s life.

Priyanka Chopra’s Mary Kom was on the receiving end of many criticisms for its unrealistic take and over dramatization of certain scenes. The actor’s resemblance to the person which is one of the crucial factors in a biopic was ignored in this film which raised questions about Bollywood’s motives behind making Biopics.

On this note, we decided to glance over some of the top Bollywood hit Biopics and detail their significance in relevance to the art and business.

Movies on Sports Personnel

One of the most popular genres that is sure to make a deafening noise among the audience and will be able to cash out irrevocably is Sports Genre. We have witnessed the massive success of films like Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Dangal, MS Dhoni: The Untold Story, Mary Kom, Paan Singh Tomar, etc. While these, stand to be good concepts to cash out, there are some films in this genre that were not successful as expected. Among those are films like Sachin: A Billion Dreams, Budhia Singh, etc. which have been on the receiving end of awards.

While sports biopics are a great way of making the struggles of a sportsman/woman known to the world, the fictionalization of stories for commercial success like in movies like Mary Kom, Azhar, etc., is a terrible move from the directors and is demeaning to the art. Also, choosing successful, but still emerging individuals who have a long way to go like Saina Nehwal, P V Sindhu, Abhinav Bindra, Mithali Raj shouts out business and exploitation more than reverence.

However, this is one side of the coin and on the other side of the coin lies some films that we can look forward to, films that are being made on legendary individuals like Dhyan Chand, Balbir Singh, etc., Murlikant Petkar, PT Usha, Kapil Dev, etc. We hope these are free of the despicable commercial moves and provide a better perspective on the lives of those revered individuals.

Biopics on Politicians, Criminals, and Celebrities

Hagiography comes to mind whenever we watch a biographical film about Freedom Fighters. Films about the highly revered men, great leaders deserve to be portrayed in a saintly way and films like Gandhi, Sardar, Bose: The Forgotten Hero, The Legend of Bhagat Singh, etc., does exactly that. An informative glimpse into the lives of these Great people have left us in awe and proved to be resourceful. Some of the upcoming films that carry a chance of falling into this category are Manikarnika (about Rani Laxmi Bai), Mahanati (about Actress Savitri), The Accidental Prime Minister (about Ex-PM Manmohan Singh), etc.

But Bollywood needs to keep the hagiography in check when making Films like Bandit Queen, depicting the life of Bandit turned Politician Phoolan Devi, Haseena Parkar, portraying the life of Dawood Ibrahim’s sister, etc. Though these films have made an impact and resonated with the audience for their bold approach and realism, the compulsion to portray the lead character as a protagonist affects the story and makes the storytelling biased.

And then there are films about Celebrities like Sanjay Dutt, Silk Smita, etc. Maybe Bollywood is exploiting the market or maybe it is true in its heart about making a Biopics. But looking at the lack of biopics about the legendary actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Raj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar, Rajesh Khanna, Dev Anand, etc., choosing an actor who had been convicted by Indian Law and an actress who made A rated films to make a biopic on, makes one question the motives of the directors.

Movies on Lesser known but Prominent individuals

Many people in the world make their mark in the history that often remains in the dark until it makes its way into the mind of a writer/ filmmaker. There are many such individuals whose greatness has been discovered and made known to the world by journalists, filmmakers, and other personnel. Falling into this category are the films like Manzhi: The Mountain Man, Padman, Shahid, Neerja, Aligarh, etc.

This type of films that depict the struggles faced by the individuals when they are fighting the system/ evil doers/ society/ ignorance take a tremendous effort without a guarantee of success. The roles in these films are challenging to the actors too. Actors are required to push themselves beyond their capabilities constantly to sync to the roles and present them in a sheer realistic way.

Films like these are made to inspire people and make them realize that they are stronger than they think they are and can do so by stepping up. Being the biggest industry in India and a prominent movie industry in the world, Bollywood bears a moral responsibility to do contribute in this area instead of looking for stories that can be commercial successes.

Upcoming Bollywood Biopics that might fall into this category are “Super 30” in which Hrithik Roshan is portraying the role of mathematician Anand Kumar the founder of Super 30, “Jhalki” in which Boman Irani will be portraying the role of Nobel Laureate Kailash Satyarthi and a film on Indian astronaut Rakesh Sharma portrayed by Aamir Khan.

Bollywood has come a long way in making Biopics as realistic as possible, but it still has a long way to go. Bollywood must tone down its need to entertain a diverse class of audience and focus on taking the art to a higher level. The necessity for content-driven biopics is at its pinnacle since the industry is now competing on a global scale.
